19thC Nature and Nationalism

The developing sense of national identity in the period, linked to particular geographical areas and ethnic groups, gave a new dimension to the representation of landscape. In this class, the role of naturalistic landscape painting in Britain, Germany and America will be considered. Artists whose work will be discussed will include Constable, Caspar David Friedrich and Thomas Cole.
